    Some great reviews but not universally loved so far!..but never mind the Media...what do *you* think?

    Here is my 2penneth.
    As you may have guessed, Wire have moved on from the relentless robo-punk of R&B1-2 and Send and are once again experimenting with a wider palette of sounds, song structures and beats.

    'One of Us' we all know by now, but re-listening as an Album opener it does indeed come across as a startling statement of intent and is firmly lodged in the 'heavy rotation' section of my brain.

    Both the opening track and 'Perspex Icon' sit very nicely alongside classic Wire 'pop' constructions like Outdoor Miner and Eardrum Buzz...Mekon Headman not far behind.

    Circumspect takes us off in an otherworldly, minor key direction that is most unexpected. Straight away its startling how much more this sounds like a 'beat combo' than the Wire of 'Send', which at times sounded like it was pieced together with drum loops and samples in Pro-tools. While I am a diehard Electronic music fan it is a delight to here a more 'human' sounding Wire.

    'Four Long Years' is perhaps the track that reminds me most of 80s Wire. It has a boldly crisp production value that would not sit out of place on The Ideal Copy or A Bell is A Cup. An absolute delight for us fans of course, but will possibly be the cause of some bewilderment to reviewers who have never heard Kidney Bingo's and are expecting Pink Flag II like the 80s & 90s never happened.

    Hard Currency starts a little bit like late 90s Massive Attack which may again cause some 'music snob' alarm bells to ring in press offices, but once the echoing lewis vocals and duggaduggadugga sounds enter the speakers you forgive them that little stylistic blip. (____footnote...I am reliably informed that the backing vocal sounds on the instrumental bits are Colin!)

    Patient Flees, while lyrically relying somewhat on the oft used device of words ending in 'tion' has a fine hypnotic circular guitar line and Colin doing the kind of vocal weirdness that echoes "I Feel Mysterious".

    'Are You Ready', Lewis once again at the helm, nods toward the wonderfully confusing 80s period Wire (and vocally even Dome) but hurls chunks of guitar at your ears that belong on 154. Yeah its that good!

    All Fours is the only track that might have sat comfortably on 'Send' (albeit it would have been a slowie on that record), but here it sounds all the more effective and thunderous.

    They always say every new Bowie lp is his best since Scary Monsters. To my ears this is a huge quantum leap from Send. I love the singles from the 80s era Wire, but for me this stands up as an enjoyable record from start to finish much more than Ideal Copy etc. so for me...*its the best since 154*.

    But yes you bastards it probably *is* about 8 minutes too short...Ari was right!
    I wrote this for Rate Your Music (excuse my english, I'm argentinian):

    WIRE: OBJECT 47 - 8.50/10

    "Object 47 is probably the poppiest Wire record. And that's not a bad thing: the band always did excelent pop songs when they wanted to (OK, OK, "Eardrum Buzz" is not that good, but you know what I mean). And not only that: when they made pop, they did it with their own personal style.

    OK: "One of us" is probably the most- "standard pop" they could make. It even sounds like New Order, for Christ's sake. But it's freaking catchy. And the lyrics don't say shit like "when I look at you, I love you". No, they are as abstract as ever.

    The other poppy efforts on this album are close to perfect too: "Mekon headman", "Perspex Icon", "Are you ready?" and "Four Long Years" are catchy, intriguing songs, that surely will get stuck in your head for days. On the other hand, "All fours", the closer, is aggresive, and though it feels a little out of place in the album, succeeds at making your head bang.

    The experimental Wire makes a little appereance in "Hard currency": a distorted loop, nasty vocals and an overall dark sound.

    The only song I can't get into is "Patient flees". Not only it runs a bit long: the chorus is a bit irritating with all those "-tion" nouns.

    Overall, Object 47 is a great album, made by a band that will never get old".
    My first impression of this record was a very strong one. I found this album to be very smooth, very pop and instantly likable. I freely admit that I am not a fan of electronic music or music that is overly digital... but I think Wire have struck a very strong happy medium with their craft. Because this album is so poppy, I think people are lazily going to draw comparisons to 80's Wire, but I think this new phase stands on it's own as something completely different. Here's my track by track run down:

    One of Us: Works very well in the context of being the opener. This is a classic Wire song and a classic CN vocal melody that immediately gets lodged into your head. My only complaint is that I think the song runs a bit longer than it should with the repetition of the chorus. Still a very strong track where all of the performers shine. A-

    Circumspect: This song took a bit longer to grow on me than the others as it's probably the least "hooky" song on the album. I think it makes for a good track two bridging the gap between two very immediate pop songs with something very dark and moody. B

    Mekon Headman: I love this tune and it's probably in contention to be among my favorite GL songs. I love the drumming and the overall sound of this song. Of all of the tunes, I think this song benefits the most from the ultra-smooth production of the album. Mr. Grey also once again re-affirms why he is my all-time favorite drummer with his great cymbal work in the chorus. A

    Perspex Icon: With this track Wire have added an addition to their list of perfect pop songs that includes "Kidney Bingoes", "Outdoor Miner" and "Map Ref". I love the vocal sound, and the melody/word play of the chorus is immediately infectious. I love how the song is almost pop-punk sounding but not quite. This is certainly my favorite Wire song from the last 15 years. I've probably listened to this song hundreds of times in the past few days... it's like a piece of candy you can't just have it once. A+

    Four Long Years: This song reminds me quite a bit of something that would've been on a Colin solo album. I love the deep pulsing bass... and once again a real winner of a vocal melody. B

    Hard Currency: I love this track! A lot of nice syncopated rythmn changes that sound very organic and build a strong feeling of tension. This would be a great track to hear live. B+

    Patient Flees: I found this song to be really interesting and a nice stylistic departure from some of the more recent stuff, especially in the almost "lazy" sound of the guitar playing/tone. Another very strong vocal melody. I'm a bit on the fence with some of the lyrics and I do agree that the "-tion" nouns gets to be overly repetitive, but it certainly doesn't ruin the song for me. B+

    Are You Ready?: Probably my least favorite track on the album. I find the whole thing to be a bit tedious, and the production on this track sounds incredibly dated to my ears. C

    All Fours: This song is just classic Wire in the purest sense. I almost couldn't believe it when I first heard it. I can't wait to hear this song live, it's a powerhouse. A+

    Overall this album is a HUGE improvement over the Send-era for me. The high points are very high and among Wire's best, the low points are very few and far between. I can't wait to hear what's next!
    My first impression is that I hope they keep going. I know The First Letter isn't a favorite amongst fans, but I think the Wir record that might have come after (Vien not withstanding) could have been tremendous. Bruce's departure appears to have resulted in a similar situation to the one the band found themselves in at that time - positions are shifted, and though the immediate results are phenomenal, they are still uneven to a degree - tracks stand out and point towards directions to be explored, others carry subtle reminders of where they've been. I'm glad Robert is on board, though - the drumming is fantastic, and though I like synthetic drums and/or percussive samples, there is indeed something quite nice about natural drumming.

    I hear a lot of what Colin has been up to with Githead informing this record, though not so much what Graham has been doing with his collaborations. The first two Read & Burns and Send are a vague memory to this album, which is a mixed blessing. I feel like Object 47 could use a shot in the arm from some Nice Streets, or perhaps a passing Germ Ship.

    It's hard to say. I see why people are talking about the Mute albums (Copy, Bell) - Four Long Years could easily have rested on The Ideal Copy, though it would have been with different instrumentation, probably samples. One Of Us has been talked up a lot due to the pre-release, but it is swimming around on its own in this album. Nearing Map. Ref. and Lorries in crafted pop, though not quite as soaring, and not as glossy as In Vivo/Eardrum Buzz. A good track, and the little pizzicato-ish stabs recall, bizarrely enough, XTC's "Great Fire". Or, for a later reference, Manitoba's "Thistles and Felt".

    I still have to go through and chew through the rest, though Perspex Icon, Patient Flees, and All Fours are already demanding my attention. Ultimately I do see this becoming a benchmark Wire album, especially if they carry the momentum forward to another release. I always felt that Wire hit their stride with Chairs Missing, and Bell - though more maligned now than I think is warranted - took what was brewing in Copy and ran with it (though I often wondered what would happen if they skipped the Madman's Honey/Ahead direction and went instead in an Ambitious/Over Theirs path instead... but perhaps that is what was re-emerging with The First Letter, and later Send). Read & Burn 04? I'm there!

    As for the sound itself, this album is a tremendous improvement over an odd trend that dates back to Oracle and other various Swim releases. Colin's bottom heavy preferences - some Object 47 tracks pull the top down a remarkable degree - are in evidence through all the albums he had a hand in mixing/engineering/producing, and it's something that I've gotten used to. However, there seemed to have been miscommunication through a lot of those records and the results could laboriously push the edges of what sounds good: Waiting, from Oracle's Tree, is such an amazing song but is lost in the standing-wave mess of the bass line being pushed up way too high. Someone, please remix this cut! There's a gorgeous song in there, but it sounds terrible.

    A lot of this has been corrected with Object 47. The tracks are clean, strong, and well-balanced. Colin's preferences (the Githead work, sonically, is very similar) show through, but that's fine, that's Wire. However, the disturbing trend evident through Read/Burn/Send of mastering for maximum racket (and compromising all other characteristics) appears to have been banished.

    That said, though I consistently fall on the CD side of music delivery and feel that vinyl is most often (though there are major exceptions) a compromise, I am looking forward to the vinyl of Object 47. It should color what I hear on the CD and bring it to the point of a beautiful-sounding record. I'm not after a Bell-like shine, but I do think there's another way to hear it. I'm looking forward to it (and what a beautiful record cover it will be at 12x12!)

    Oddly enough, one other thing I notice right off the bat: Bob Mould fans would love this album. All I'm gonna say.
    As i'm slowly getting to know the album, as each track starts & i recognise it & anticipate it, i think "this is my fave track", but that happens NINE times! i'm not gonna review it & i'm certainly not gonna compare it to previous Wire releases (lazy journalism & futile with respect to this band). It stands alone - imperious amongst contemporary releases and as individual as any other Wire release. All i'm gonna say is that it FUCKING ROCKS!
