Such a treat to finally see The Pop Group in Manchester this week. An excellent set with a terrific selection of songs, all gems: Thief Of Fire, She Is Beyond Good And Evil, We Are Time, Colourblind. Springing from the traps with, appropriately enough, Trap, they hit the ground running. Mark Stewart is constantly on the move, prowling like a trapped tiger. An intense, imposing presence, now sporting a moustache, which makes him look quite… south American (perhaps we should call him Marco). His constant movement presented quite a challenge in terms of photographing him, but I struggled valiantly nonetheless. Despite being a bit under the weather, he was vocally strong, no loss of power in the last 30 years it seems. Band in top form. Bassist bears a bit of a passing resemblance to a certain ex-Wire manager. Uncanny. They did a session with Marc Riley earlier that evening, and did storming versions of Good & Evil, Thief Of Fire and Where There's A Will, with some nice dub treatments which they could've exploited a bit onstage. Well worth a listen while it's still on the iPlayer. And more than well worth catching on the remainder of the tour, if you've not already booked.
