I couldn't resist a trip over the Pennines for this one not least as I've heard great things about The Unity Works. It is indeed a great place, terrific venue and hats off to the team that have made this once derelict building into a fantastic space. It's a cross between Band on the Wall in Manchester and The Union Chapel maybe?. Very impressive.

There are two live venues on site, the "Minor" room would have been far too small but the "Major" room has a capacity of 700 which is a bit too big for a low key Wire warm up gig really, got a respectable number of people in though and to be honest it was great to see them in a big open space, they were able to crank the volume up and not have to jostle for position or tread on toes to get to the bar. Probably pretty useful for the band to practice on a big stage ahead of the 6Music festival as well

Graham announced that he thought they might have played Wakefield in 1978 and recalled having a bottle throw at him, Colin claimed he was too young to remember!  It's not in the Gigography...anyone know?

The set was front loaded with 'oldies'...can't recall the exact order (hopefully someone does) but we got Boiling Boy, Adore your Island, Advantage in Height, Please Take, Stealth of a Stork, and a very electronic Drill (Graham and Matt mostly knob twiddling) before anything new. Of the new stuff we got Swallow, Blogging, In Manchester, Joust and Jostle...a new slow one with lots of fx pedal and electronics which I'm guessing was Sleep-Walking (Robert is triggering samples of big booming bass drops from his kit on this, Harpooned and other tracks). Only one Wire MK1 track...Two People in a Room, and a massive Harpooned to close.  Encore was Underwater Experiences (the fast version) and Spent.
I really enjoyed this one, helped by being in such a relaxed and pleasant space which meant you could just immerse yourself in the noise and watch Wire at work. The new tracks seemed to get the biggest reaction, and I didn't hear any gripes about lack of 12XU etc. I think anyone who turns out for a Wire gig these days either knows the score is open to whatever Wire can throw at them.
Everyone seemed to enjoy being Harpooned, I hope the 6Music festival crowd do too.

As above, excellent gig, lovely venue, the new stuff is strong and really is the highlight. Loved the new slow one with very dramatic lighting. Sound was very loud and have a definite buzz in the eardrum this morning.....

I like the look of that set list. Good to see they've ceased ending the set with Pink Flag, which was getting a bit predictable. Hopefully a few more new ones added for the main tour.

I've now seen the setlist for Wakefield. Slightly different than in Leicester, with one song less and a different order:
    Boiling boy
    Adore your island
    Advantage in height
    Please take
    Stealth of a stork
    Drill
    Swallow
    Blogging
    Joust & jostle
    In Manchester
    Sleepwalking
    Split your ends
    Two people in a room
    Harpooned
    Underwater experiences
    Spent

For those who don't have a Dime a Dozen account, I've uploaded the Leicester show, which was posted this morning:

We took the trip up to Wakefield from Nottingham & were really glad we made the effort. I thought the sound was a bit dicey, & the room far too big (1/3 full at best?), for the first couple of songs but things picked up really quickly. A few curious locals bailed out early I think, but I was pleasantly surprised by the distinct lack of calls for "12XU" et al. The new songs were the highlight(s) of the set for me - "Harpooned" was absolutely incredible - early Black Sabbath remixed by Adrian "On-U Sound" Sherwood perhaps? - I'm definitely looking forward to hearing that one on the new LP.

A gallery of excellent photographs (not mine sadly) from Wakefield:

Ah, thanks! I run a forum where we just copy the IMG image ond it puts it straight on. Will remember for the next time.
