I would say art and music in general have inspired me and given me a great deal of pleasure. Life would be very dull without it. Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Wire have been kind of the holy trinity of rock for me. You don't need much more than that, though
my other interests are so varied I couldn't begin to tell you in a short post. When I was a little kid in the 1960's my father had a lot of old 45's, stuff like Tommy Dorsey and his Big Band, but the one I really liked was a song called The Yellow Rose of Texas.
I would play it over and over. That shit amused me to death for months on end! When I was a little bit older my brother took me to one of the Loews's wonder theaters in NJ and that's when I became aware of the quality of sound. The sounds from the special effects of the cartoons so loud and clear and fresh they just hung in the air. Then later on my brother brought home records by Joan Baez and Bob Dylan which I hated but it opened the door to my radicalization. Protest music led me to be interested in people like Abbie Hoffman, Malcolm X, Black Panthers, SDS, and later anti-capitalist groups in Europe. At that time I was listening to great stuff like She's Not There by the Zombies, Love Potion # 9, Eric Burden, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, British Invasion stuff. The Beatles not so much, but I did like Norwegian Wood and Within You/ Without You. I was floored the first time I heard River Deep, Mountain High by Tina Turner- that was Phil Spector's wall of sound mini-masterpice. I thought Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers was fucking brilliant. And when I heard Lou Reed's Rock 'n Roll I guess my life was saved a bit.
